Sorrento is a surprisingly versatile destination. It is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, an excellent base for hikers and culture lovers and an easily accessible summer resort.
This versatility makes it of fundamental importance to choose where to stay in Sorrento. Although the center is compact, there are areas more or less suitable according to your needs as a traveler.
As you continue reading, you will find out which are the best areas to stay in Sorrento and I will provide you with a list of the best hotels in Sorrento for reviews, location, cleanliness and value quality price.
Where to stay in Sorrento: the best areas

Sorrento’s strengths are its excellent connections with Capri, Positano, Amalfi and Pompeii, its splendid views and a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets, including hotels, apartments and B&B.
The best area to stay in Sorrento will depend on your budget and the type of holiday you have in mind. It is important to know that there are very few beaches in this area; access to the sea is mainly allowed via wooden platforms of the paid bathing establishments. So, if you are traveling with small children, consider the option of a hotel with a swimming pool.
Further east are the cities of Sant’Agnello , Piano di Sorrento and Meta di Sorrento. Although the four cities have separate names and identities, in reality they look more like a suburban sprawl of Sorrento. These can be a great alternative if you prefer quieter or cheaper areas.
Here is an overview of the best areas to sleep in Sorrento:
- Where to sleep in Sorrento near the center: Piazza Tasso
- The best area of Sorrento for nightlife: Corso Italia
- The most beautiful place to stay in Sorrento: Sant’Agnello
- The best neighborhood in Sorrento for families: Piano di Sorrento
Sorrento Center
The historical center of Sorrento is an alternation of quaint streets and ancient buildings. This is the place to stay in Sorrento if you want to enjoy nightlife of the main shopping streets, have easy access to public transport and organize your excursions.
You can stop for an aperitif at Piazza Tasso and then continue along Corso Italia for an afternoon of shopping. A stop at the Gelateria Primavera is a must, where the walls are covered with photos of actors and celebrities who have passed through here.
There is no shortage of accommodation options and mainly consist of B&B’s, holiday homes and small town hotels. There are many advantages to staying in this area – including the atmosphere, the convenience and the history – but it will be difficult to find hotels with swimming pools or rooftop terraces.
To find luxury hotels, you have to move towards the cliff. Prices are not always as high as you might expect (certainly cheaper than hotels in Amalfi and Positano) so we might as well take a look at this solution too. Most have large swimming pools, spas and panoramic terraces overlooking the Gulf of Naples.
Sant’Agnello
From Sant’Agnello you can quickly reach Piazza Tasso on foot or by bus. It is a popular place to stay, with a large selection of hotels, including some of the most luxurious on the Amalfi Coast.
It is a quieter and generally cheaper area than the historic center of Sorrento. You will still be able to enjoy the nightlife of Sorrento, even if the area boasts excellent restaurants.
There are no great alternatives for the sea, the only establishment is that of La Marinella , with a very small beach and a large wooden platform overlooking the sea.
Piano di Sorrento
Piano di Sorrento is the best area to stay in Sorrento with the family. It is quieter than the center of Sorrento, which is easily accessible by bus, on foot or by the Circumvesuviana.
On the beach of Marina di Cassano you can organize boat trips or day trips to Pompeii. Near the marina there is a small park, great for jogging or organizing a picnic with the family.
A short distance away, Meta di Sorrento has a long sandy beach (by local standards) which becomes very popular in summer. These areas are outside what is the actual Amalfi Coast, but are cheaper, quieter and with a less touristy feel.
